Strange noises and smells are early warnings. Catching them early is the difference between a cheap fix and a dead compressor.

Common noises

• Rattling or buzzing — a loose panel, debris in the fan, or a failing fan motor.
• Clicking that will not start — often a failed run capacitor, a cheap and common fix.
• Hissing — can point to a refrigerant leak; worth a check.
• Grinding — a motor bearing on the way out. Stop using it and book a diagnosis.

Common smells

• Musty or mouldy — mould in the indoor unit and drain. A service and clean sorts it, and your air quality.

• Sour or vinegary — usually mould or a dirty filter.
