Here are the most common reasons why your Air Conditioner is not working properly.
Poor Air Filter Quality
Air filters over time can be clogged up with dust, dirt and even mould and mildew. If you shine a torch inside your system and can’t see anything, it's a sure sign that the air filter needs to be looked at. If the air filter is not cleaned, not only will your air conditioner not operate effectively, a number of other problems can start to affect your system. One of the main problems is the build up of allergens in the duct which in turn will be released into the air you breathe. For anyone with asthma or respiratory allergies, this is something you want to avoid.
Let's face it; restricted air flow will be costly not only to your system but to your health. Air filters need to be cleaned at least once a year, or ideally every couple of months, depending on usage frequency. Just like cars need to be regularly serviced, air conditioning systems need regular maintenance. An ideal time is in Spring, just before the hotter weather arrives so you know your system is ready to handle the extra load.
Central Thermostat
Checking the Central Thermostat can sometimes be a ‘no brainer’ to make sure the settings are correct. However, there are also more possible serious problems that can arise in a faulty thermostat including loose wiring, dust buildup, blown fuses, tripped breakers or dead batteries that need further investigation.
Evaporator and Condenser Coils
Most people don’t realise that our air conditioners work by taking in hot air, converting into a gas and then converting it again into hot liquid which is passed outside through the condenser coils. When these condenser coils are damaged, the system can’t effectively convert the heat and hence it seems like the Air Conditioner is not working to cool the space. Condenser coils are likely to be damaged and need to be replaced when:
Refrigerant leaking
A refrigerant leak is something you don’t want. The Refrigerant, also known as Freon is a chemical that is used to absorb very high heat and undergoes the process of expansion and vaporising of heat to produce cool air.
Refrigerants are chlorofluorocarbons which can pose serious dangers to your health. While tasteless and odourless, refrigerant poisoning can lead to respiratory problems such as breathing difficulty, nausea, headaches, vomiting. Left untreated, the symptoms can be fatal. Refrigerant leaks typically occur when the coils are damaged by corrosion or through leaky/malfunctioning valves. This is something you don’t want to mess around with.
Faulty or poor wiring/installation
The air conditioner is one of the larger appliances you have in your home and there is a considerable amount of electrical currents pulsing through the panel. If you find that your air conditioner continues to trip the circuit breaker or you experience a blown fuse, it's a likely sign that you have faulty electrical wiring. Wires that are broken or frayed or exposed can usually be caused by poor installation. Any defective exposed wiring needs to be addressed immediately to avoid a potential fire hazard.
Clogged drain lines
Over time, moisture from the air condenses and drips as water. Every air conditioner has a drip pan that collects this water before passing it outside the house via drain lines. After a while, that water can turn mouldy or be filled with algae which in turn will clog up the drain line. You can usually tell if there is a musty, mouldy smell coming from your air conditioning unit. Whilst there are a few DIY methods of unclogging your drain lines, for peace of mind, use a trusted professional to ensure that the problem is 100% fixed.
Compressor unit issue
At the heart of your air conditioning system is the compressor, responsible for pressurizing the refrigerant so that heat can be absorbed from your room and extracted outside the house. If there is a problem with the AC compressor, you will notice things like strange noises or vibrations coming from it. It may not even turn on or hot air is coming from it. A broken compressor could mean replacing the entire air conditioning system which means it's very important to get the right diagnosis if you suspect the AC compressor is faulty.
It can be a bit confusing trying to understand the different options available when purchasing an air conditioning system for your home or office. There are essentially 3 types to consider: they are split system, multi split and ducted air conditioning. Each system has their own pros and cons.
To help you decide, here are 3 things to consider.
Office and retail spaces will need to have air conditioning running most of the time throughout the rooms that they have. For residents however, the planned usage will differ by size of the home and whether you need air conditioning throughout the home or only for certain rooms. The smaller the home the more suitable it is for a split system.
If budget is the main consideration then installing a split system air conditioner is the most cost effective option as you can install in a single room and add more units as you need to. Ducted air will be most suitable for those who are willing to invest the extra installation cost knowing they need to use it constantly and throughout a larger space. If you need to have air conditioning in multiple rooms then either a multi - split (up to 5) or a ducted system will make more sense as it will be more cost effective than to install a number of individual split units.
Due to lower energy demands, split systems are obviously more affordable as you are only paying for each individual unit operating whilst multi and ducted systems are more comprehensive and use more energy across multiple rooms.
A split system is an air conditioning unit that is 'split' into an external unit (compressor) and an internal unit that blows cool air to a room. They are designed to cool or heat individual rooms and is most suited to those that only need to condition one or two single rooms. The advantage of split systems is that they are more affordable and easier to install than the other two options. They can be mounted on the wall, floor standing or on the ceiling and are fairly cost effective to run. However they are not suitable for larger homes that require heating or cooling of multiple rooms unless there is enough external space to put in multiple compressors. These external units are quite large and can look obtrusive if the space for them is limited.
Unlike a single split system air, multi split systems can run many indoor units from a single external compressor. With a reverse cycle system, this means that you can control the cooling or heating of multiple rooms with different temperatures quite easily. Because you only need one outdoor unit to condition up to 5 rooms at once, it means you save on external space. For people living in townhouses or smaller homes with limited external space on balconies and patios, this is an attractive feature. Moreover, unlike ducted air conditioning which requires sufficient roof space to install, multi splits are far easier to install, only using the wall space to do so. Whilst you require an internal unit for each room, the models nowadays are becoming much more compact and tidy.
Ducted air conditioning uses a series of ducts connected to a central fan coil unit in the roof to cool or heat each room. Ducted systems allow you to cool or heat every room simultaneously or alternatively, using the zoning feature to control the temperature and conditioning of different areas of the house. Ducted air conditioning provides the best aesthetics to your home because there are no bulky indoor units required, only grilled vents that are typically installed either on the wall or ceiling. Of all the systems, ducted is the most quiet and best at maintaining an even temperature in a home. The downside of ducted air conditioning systems is that the installation cost is much higher and more intrusive as it involves working inside the roof cavity. As an investment, ducted systems are permanent and would suit a home owner looking to use it over a longer period.
Whatever system you need installed, our Eastern suburbs air conditioning installation team will be able to guide you on the range of options to suit your home whether its for year round reverse cycle cooling and heating or for cooling a single room.
