Does Your Aircon Need a Re-Gas? The Honest Answer

Short answer: probably not

Refrigerant is not fuel. A split system or a ducted unit does not burn through gas the way a car burns petrol. The refrigerant circuit is a sealed loop, and in a healthy system the same charge circulates for the life of the unit.

So if a technician tells you the system is low on gas, the real question is not how much a re-gas costs. It is where the gas went. Every low charge means a leak.

Signs the charge might actually be low

• Air from the vents is cool but never properly cold, even on a mild day
• Ice forming on the indoor coil or on the copper pipework at the outdoor unit
• The outdoor unit runs constantly but the room never reaches the set temperature
• Run times getting longer month after month, with power bills creeping up
• A faint hissing or bubbling sound from the indoor head
• An oily residue around pipe joints at the outdoor unit

Plenty of other faults look identical

This is the part most people miss. Weak cooling has at least half a dozen causes that have nothing to do with refrigerant:

• Filters clogged with dust, pet hair or Perth summer pollen
• A filthy outdoor coil, common in the foothills and Swan Valley where fine dust settles fast
• A failing run capacitor, so the compressor struggles to start
• A faulty thermistor reading the room temperature wrong
• A stuck reversing valve on a reverse-cycle system
• Leaking or crushed ductwork in the roof space

Any competent aircon repair visit checks these before touching a gas bottle. If someone reaches for the refrigerant in the first five minutes, ask what they measured.

What a proper re-gas job actually involves

1. Full diagnostic including electrical checks, airflow and operating pressures
2. Leak detection using a nitrogen pressure test, an electronic detector, or UV dye
3. Repair the leak by re-brazing the joint, replacing a flare nut, or replacing the failed coil
4. Evacuate the system with a vacuum pump so moisture and air are pulled out
5. Weigh in the exact charge listed on the data plate, not a guess by gauge pressure
6. Run and verify superheat, subcooling and vent temperatures

Skipping steps two and four is why so many topped-up systems fail again within a season. Gas added to a leaking system leaks straight back out, and you have paid for refrigerant that is now in the atmosphere. Under Australian regulations, knowingly venting refrigerant is also illegal.

Older R22 systems

Units installed before roughly 2008 may still run R22, which has been phased out in Australia. Supply is scarce and the price per kilogram is steep. If an R22 system develops a significant leak, the money is usually better spent on a new unit than on repeated top-ups. • Ducted and multi-head systems are quoted after inspection, because access drives the cost

Charging by the kilo is deliberate. A 2.5kW split holds far less gas than a ducted system, and you should not subsidise someone else's bigger unit. Every line we charge is on the pricing page.

How to avoid needing one at all

Most leaks start at vibrating pipe joints and corroded coils, both of which are easier to catch early than to fix late. An annual deep service and clean picks up oil traces and pressure drift long before the unit stops cooling in February.

Put a reminder in your phone for early spring and you avoid the February queue entirely.
